Should we be measuring DNA damage in human spermatozoa? New light on an old question

Abstract Assessments of sperm DNA damage are controversial because perceived uncertainties over the relationship with pregnancy and limited range therapies available should positive results be returned. In this article, we highlight recent data supporting a chain associations between oxidative stress in male germ line, spermatozoa, defective repair oocyte, mutational load carried by resulting embryo long-term health trajectory offspring. Any condition capable generating spermatozoa (age, obesity, smoking, prolonged abstinence, varicocele, chemical exposures, radiation etc.) is influencing offspring manner, creating pathologies progeny including neuropsychiatric disorders cancer.
